I don’t know how many times I have to say it, but I cannot wait to get back to the city of London when it’s safe to do so! There’s just something magical about Town Crying in the capital, so today I’ve put together some stellar facts on one of my favourite stomping grounds, Camden Market.
1. The food is Olympic medal worthy
The fist food stall – called ‘The Stall’ – was opened in 1974 by Olympic sprinter, June Foulds. Foulds won a bronze and silver medal for the 100 metre relay in the 1952 and 1956 Olympic Games.
2. It’s a write literary place to be
The city of London’s Camden Market is said to have been home to many a famous historical writer. Think Mary Shelley, George Orwell and even Charles Dickens himself.
3. It’s a big deal for Londoners
Yes, we’re all familiar with the charms of Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London but did you know that Camden Market in the fair City of London is actually London’s fourth-largest attraction? It’s thought that around 100,000 people mosey round the stalls and shops every single weekend! With almost 300 stalls and over 50 shops, there’s a lot to see in Camden Market.
4. You can’t keep your horse there any longer
Once upon a time you might have been able to! Yes, part of Camden Market was previously known as Stables Market, as a nod to its history as Pickfords’ horse stables and horse hospital. It used to serve the animals that pulled the Pickford vans but these days serves a variety of delicious cuisines instead.
5. It’s film famous
If anyone’s familiar with the classic film ‘Withnail and I’ then you might just recognise Camden Market. The film itself is set around Camden Town but features the Market too – what a claim to fame!
6. It moonlights by night…
By day Electric Ballroom is filled with shops but by night it’s transformed into a nightclub which has been running since the 1950s. Home to no fewer than two dance floors and four bars, it’s played host to The Clash, U2, Paul McCartney and many more.
Gosh! After reading those magnificent facts I bet, like me, you can’t wait to take a trip and acquaint yourself with the dazzling spectacle of Camden Market. Once the pandemic is over, I’ll be back to my weekend spot in the city of London, so make sure you come and say hi! Snap a picture with me and send it to alanmyatt@blueyonder.co.uk
