You may have heard in the local rag that this year’s town criers’ competition was to be held silently. Well, I just couldn’t believe it! As a man with an award-winning voice, I’m not usually one to be silenced!
Of course, this was due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, and one can understand that in these trying times we must find ways to persevere. The theme for this year’s competition was ‘nature and the environment’ and for the first time ever it had to be held in complete silence, with competitors being judged on their written cries alone.
The competition supported Mental Health Week, which takes place between 10th-16th May. All funds raised will go to Shout, a text service providing mental health support.
I think it was a magnificent idea and I’m supportive of anything that raises money for charity, especially mental health charities. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused numerous mental health issues for people and such charities need our support now more than ever. But did I enter the competition myself? Well, I’m a traditionalist at heart… can you imagine me being quiet for a day?
