It was off to the seaside for me the other day as I headed down to Weston-super-Mare. I’d been invited by the Town Council to act as compere for their Armed Forces Weekend. My character, Captain Square, helped keep things in order and running to schedule throughout the two days.
There was a lot going on – static vehicle displays, marching bands, arena events, working field kitchens and lots more. On the Saturday evening, the Royal British Legion held a 1940s themed buffet dance in the Winter Gardens with music provided by the RAFA Band.
And on Sunday, there was a thanksgiving service with a standards parade in the morning followed by an open air Beating the Retreat and Sunset concert to close the show in late afternoon. The show was supported by Combined Cadet forces as well as full-time members of the Armed Services and several other support groups and charities.
